Sponsored PhD studentship in Geoinformatics: Development of web-based GIS system for geoenvironmental data
A 3 year PhD studentship is available at the Geoenvironmental Research Centre (GRC), Cardiff University .
The PhD is part of the work undertaken by the SEREN project funded by the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO). For more details please visit our web site at http://grc.engineering.cf.ac.uk/. The studentship is available for immediate start in Geoinformatics. Other studentships may become available for later start.
PhD topic - Development of web-based GIS system for geoenvironmental data.
A web-based GIS system will be created based upon existing GIS software developed. A variety of tools will be incorporated to allow environmental data to be collected, both on the surface and subsurface, and decisions to be taken.
These tools may include:
i) surface/sub-surface display;
ii) disparate information collection, e.g. mobile phone applications;
iii) multi-physics models for process prediction;
iv) Artificial Intelligence (AI) decision support systems.
The visualisation of the results and useful webdisplay will be an important aspect of this PhD. It is anticipated that among other applications, a large scale case study of analysing the performance of CO2 sequestration in coal in Wales will be undertaken.
Funding Notes
The PhD will be fully funded as follows:
- Stipend of c.£16,950 per year tax free with inflationary increase
- Candidate is expected to fund their own fees currently £3,466 per year for UK/EU student.
