DESCRIPTION OF BRANCH/GROUP/SECTION
The Alberta Geological Survey of the Energy Resources Conservation Board provides geoscience information and expertise needed by government, industry and the public for earth-resource stewardship and sustainable development in Alberta . Located in Edmonton , the AGS has over 40 geologists, engineers, technologists and science specialists who map the geology of Alberta , describe its earth resources, and provide advice on geological hazards. At AGS, individuals have the opportunity to: work on challenging projects of major importance to Albertans; work with advanced technology on a daily basis; stay current in their fields while making significant contributions to their communities of practice; collaborate with provincial, national and international organizations on projects of wide interest; and conduct fieldwork in both nearby and remote parts of Alberta.
PURPOSE OF ROLE:
The primary function for the incumbent will be to work within the Alberta Geological Survey to lead in the application of remote sensing technologies to map and characterize geological units and processes in Alberta . The incumbent would work with a team of engineers, scientists and technologists with expertise in ground hazards, groundwater, geomechanics and mapping. A specific focus of the position will be to use remote sensing technologies to aid in the mapping of ground movements associated with naturally occurring near surface hazards and with deeper hazards associated with in-situ resource extraction in the province of Alberta .
The incumbent will lead in the development and application of remote sensing technologies to support the organizational objectives and strategies of the AGS/ERCB and will be responsible for developing expertise and collaborations to support this goal.
RESPONSIBILITIES/ DUTIES:
Write applied reports for technical professionals in government and industry
Lead the application of terrestrial, airborne and spaceborne remote sensing technologies to the mapping and characterization of the geology, resources and geological hazards in Alberta
Develop and maintain relationships with provincial, federal and international agencies working in common areas of interest.
Develop and maintain in-house technical expertise and reputation in the field of geological remote sensing applications.
Work with AGS/ERCB personnel to understand the requirements and applications of remote sensing technologies as they relate to the corporate line-of-business.
Generate public education material to be disseminated through the AGS web site and AGS print publications.
Disseminate knowledge through geological reports, maps and the AGS web site.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ph.D or M.Sc. in an earth sciences, geomatics engineering, or remote sensing discipline, preferably on a topic related to mapping of geological units, processes and hazards, with at least 5 years of relevant work experience.
Working knowledge of advanced remote sensing processing platforms.
Solid track record in the application of remote sensing data to geological mapping and deformation analysis. Specific experience in the application of spaceborne InSAR is required.
An academic background in geostatistics would be an asset
Knowledge of common PC office software and GIS software (ArcMap experience preferred).
Well-developed organizational and analytical skills.
High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Excellent presentation and writing skills
Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
