PhD position in FSU Jena: Radar Remote Sensing

At the Department of Earth Observation, Institute for Geography, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, the following job vacancy is to be filled within the framework of the BMBF project INFLUINS:

1 doctoral candidate (ca. 80%, 3 years) in radar remote sensing (start between 15th of August and 01st of December 2011).

We search for a person with substantiated knowledge in radar remote sensing, in particular in SAR Interferometrie. The capability of becoming acquainted with a new topic including the use of new software packages (we use Gamma for SAR processing) is assumed. Basic programming skills (e.g. IDL, Matlab) as well as mathematical and physical comprehension are precondition.

Qualification for this position is the completed academic studies (University or University of Applied Science) in the area of Engineering, Geoscience, Mathematics or Physics (or comparable).

INFLUINS is a very large cooperative project involving diverse Universities and enterprises. Major aim of the overall INFLUINS project is to investigate the Thuringian Basin with regards to its Geology and Hydrogeology. One subproject deals with the derivation of small scale (in terms of vertical movement) dynamics of the earth’s surface based on SAR Interferometrie and PS Interferometrie. The investigation of satellite based SAR data will focus on surface height variations in the order of few millimetres per year. With regards to SAR satellite data numerous missions are available, such as ALOS PALSAR, ERS-1, 2, ENVISAT ASAR, and TerraSAR-X. In many studies the principle of DIFINSAR and PS was applied successfully to detect small scale surface deformations with varying cause (mining, oil and gas extraction, groundwater table variations etc.). Spaceborne SAR data, acquired throughout the year and thus covering diverse weather conditions and all states of groundwater levels, will be investigated close to the bore hole, which will be drilled in the framework of the overall INFLUINS project. Aim is to link the by SAR data derived spatial surface elevation variations to changes in the ground water level. The INSAR and PS results will be validated by means of ground water gauge time series and the bore hole, to identify the fluid induced signal.

The Chair of Earth Observation is involved in numerous programmes of national and international space agencies, including DLR, ESA and JAXA in the context of the TerraSAR-X satellite, ERS-1/ERS-2 Tandem Mission, several ENVISAT Cat-1 projects, and the Japanese ALOS satellite. The department’s scientists are internationally well recognized in the areas of land cover and forest biomass mapping.
