Geomatics covers the science and technology of gathering different sources of geospatial data, which after storing, interpreting, analyzing, modelling and distributing, can be turned into useful geographic information. Geomatics involves the tools and techniques used in surveying, cartography, photogrammetry, remote sensing, satellite navigation systems, geographical information systems and other earth-related disciplines.

FELLOWSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT (JOB OPPORTUNITY)


The MIDAS-6 research project (“SMOS ocean salinity and soil moisture products. Improvements and applications demonstrationâ€, PI Dr. Jordi Font), which is part of the Spanish contribution to the European Space Agency Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission (http://www.esa.int/esaLP/LPsmos.html), has been granted with a fellowship to carry out a PhD in the Department of Physical Oceanography of the Institut de Ciències del Mar (CSIC) in Barcelona (http://www.icm.csic.es/oce/).

The PhD will be carried out in the domain of SMOS salinity data exploitation by addressing the generation of level 4 salinity maps using data fusion techniques. This research will be integrated in the activities of the SMOS Barcelona Expert Centre on Radiometric Calibration and Ocean Salinity (
http://www.smos-bec.icm.csic.es/)

Candidates (citizens from the European Union or having a residence permit in Spain) should be graduate students in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering or Marine Sciences with background in numerical and computation methods and geophysics. They should send a detailed CV to
smosphd@cmima.csic.es and later apply to the FPI (Formación de Personal Investigador) fellowship call by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation to be issued in the next weeks.
